Scraps of Darkness March Kit - "Little Colonel" Layout

Hello everyone! Today I am excited to share my first layout titled "Little Colonel" using March's Scraps of Darkness "Boys Will Be Boys" kit. Do not let the name of the kit this month fool you... there are many fun ways to change things up and create some Girls Will Be Girls layouts as well!

Mixed Media Scrapbook Layout Scraps of Darkness Shirley Temple

When I saw the Papermania Denim Blue Metal Buttons from the Elements Add On kit, I immediately thought of this picture of Shirley Temple. When my grandfather was in the military and stationed in Hawaii, he actually took some amazing pictures of different celebrities.

Using one of the papers from the Blue Fern Studios' Chesterville Collection from the main kit, I began layering different paints and inks over my stenciled areas. I used a couple of the BoBunny Life In Color Collection Misc. Me journaling cards under my picture along with some of the Blue Fern Studios' chipboard packaging.

To color the Ruby Rock-It Bella! Paper Flower, I first applied clear gesso, let it dry, then sprayed it with some Lindy's Stamp Gang mist.

To add a bit of color to my layout, I used the Tim Holtz Salty Ocean Distress Crayon from the main kit to accent my fabric pieces that I had colored with Black Gesso. Using some matte gel medium, I randomly applied the American Crafts POP! Microbeads from the Elements Add On Kit since they match the Tim Holtz distress crayon wonderfully.

As a final touch, I adhered the Darice Black Sequins under the photo.

I hope I was able to inspire you with my vintage layout of Shirley Temple using the March Scraps of Darkness "Boys Will Be Boys" Main Kit and the Elements Add On Kit. You can click here to access the Scraps of Darkness online store.

"Lovely" - Mixed Media Scrapbook Layout

Howdy folks! I just finished a new layout titled "Lovely".

Mixed Media Scrapbook Layout 13arts

This layout is my entry for this month's challenge at the 13@rts blog - the theme is "clocks" so a clock has to be somewhere on the project.  Here is the mood board for 13@rts:

For inspiration, I also used the 13@rts March Sketch found on the 13 arts ARTelier facebook page.

Also, I am submitting the layout to this month's Words and Paintery challenge - I was intrigued by the color scheme and decided to try it out.

Here are some close ups to see some of the details:

List of Products:
  • 13@rts
    • Paper: Out of the Blue Collection - "Dreamland" / Timeless" Collection - "All the Time" (the two clocks)

P.S.  I intended to make a video tutorial for this layout. I even continued recording through a gesso accident and a huge glitter spill. But when I spilled embossing powder right after I vacuumed up the glitter, I realized it was mostly a blooper reel and not much of a tutorial... I will be trying to do another video tutorial for my next project.

After so many mishaps, I decided I am making a second youtube playlist dedicated strictly to my bloopers on my videos or pictures of my spills and messes. Wouldn't that be fun? One of my favorite parts of mixed media is making a mess. :-) Why not capture those moments too?

Anyhow, thanks for checking out my "Lovely" layout (haha) today.  Have a great day everyone!

Faux Wood - Mixed Media Decor

Hello ladies and gentlemen! It has been a while since I posted a new project, and I tried something a little bit out of my comfort range. I decided to do a little home decor project this time. Using a lot of different media to create the background, I went for a weathered wooden panel look.

Faux Wood mixed media crackle home decor

I used lace from an older Scraps of Elegance kit, rhinestones, microbeads, cardboard, and many other items (including Q-Tips to make the little berry branch). Here are some closeups and details:

I was inspired to make this from two different challenges. The first one is the Scrap Magic challenge - wood and rhinestones.  Here is the gorgeous inspiration board:

Also, when I saw the sketch at the Mistress Owl blog, I felt that a home decor item would do really well to fit the sketch.

I hope you enjoyed my interpretation of the challenges - both blogs offer great inspiration!
